The Composition

Highland is a walk across the moor at the end of the season. Juniper berry and Scots pine needle open it cold and resinous, with black pepper to sharpen the air.

Wild heather and smoky lapsang souchong tea form the heart, deepened by labdanum. Then the fire is lit: peat smoke, guaiac wood and damp moss, drying down to something warm, dark and quietly reassuring.

Wearing it

One spray is often enough; two on a cold day. Best out of doors and by the fire, on tweed, knitwear and waxed cotton. The smoke settles quickly into something warm, and lasts longest on wool.

The lodge, late in the season

About Highland

Highland, a smoky aromatic eau de parfum of heather and peat smoke, is the lodge late in the season: mist lying in the glen, a stone lodge with one lamp lit, and the long walk home across the heather. Heather on the hill, peat in the grate, and a flask of something older than you are.

Aromatic smoky means the cold, resinous herbs and conifers of an aromatic fragrance, laid over smoke. It is the House’s wild one, and by the end it is warm.

Juniper berry and Scots pine needle open it cold and resinous, with black pepper to sharpen the air. Wild heather and smoky lapsang souchong tea form the heart, deepened by labdanum, the resin that gives amber its warmth. Then the fire is lit: peat smoke, guaiac wood and damp moss, drying down to something warm, dark and quietly reassuring. The lapsang is a black tea smoked over pine fires, and it ties the two halves together: the pine of the hillside and the smoke of the grate.

It is a peat smoke fragrance, but it is not a bonfire. The smoke sits under the heather and pine, as it does in a glen when someone has lit the stove in the lodge and the wind has carried it up the hill. If you have looked for a perfume that smells of woodsmoke, or of the fire at the end of a long day outside, this is the House’s answer, kept quieter than the real thing.

Highland suits people who are happiest with mud on their boots: it smells of a day spent out of doors, and of the fire at the end of it.

How it wears

One spray is often enough; two on a cold day. Highland belongs to October to February, out of doors and by the fire.

It is at home on tweed, knitwear and waxed cotton, and on a scarf that has been out on the hill. Wear it for a long walk on a cold morning, Bonfire Night, Burns Night, a dram after dinner, a week in a cottage with no signal.

The smoke settles quickly into something warm. In the city it is best kept for the evening and the weekend; in summer, the House would leave it in the drawer and wear Henley.

Questions about Highland

What does Highland smell like?

Juniper, Scots pine and black pepper at first, cold and resinous. Then wild heather and smoky lapsang tea, with labdanum. Then peat smoke, guaiac wood and damp moss, warm and dark.

Is Highland very smoky?

It is the smoky one of our six, but the smoke is part of a landscape rather than the whole of it. It sits under heather and pine, and it softens into warmth. There is more on how perfumers make smoke in our note on peat smoke.

What fragrance family is Highland?

Aromatic smoky: the herbs and conifers of an aromatic fragrance, juniper, pine and heather, laid over smoke and resin.

How is Highland different from The Library?

Both are warm and both have labdanum. Highland is out of doors, with juniper, heather and peat smoke. The Library is indoors, with tobacco leaf, papyrus and orris, and it has no real smoke at all.

Can I try Highland before choosing a bottle?

Yes. The Discovery Set holds all six of our eaux de parfum in 2 ml atomisers, so you can wear Highland for a day beside the others. Its £38 is credited in full against your first bottle, or The Pair.

When can I order Highland?

Not quite yet. Register free with the form above; it commits you to nothing. We make three fragrances first, in time for Christmas, guided by which ones people ask for, and the other three in the new year. The first hundred to register become founding members, with 48 hours to pre-order before anyone else: £95 founding price, £110 after.
