The Composition

Saddle Room is a leather fragrance without swagger. Saffron and bitter orange open it with a golden, slightly bitter glow, like the light from a lantern hung on a nail.

Hay absolute and supple suede form the heart, threaded with the faintest smoke of birch tar. The drydown is warm and close: tonka, creamy sandalwood and a leather accord that smells of care and use rather than a new handbag.

Wearing it

One spray at the throat, one at the inside of the wrist. A leather for October to March, on tweed and suede. Close to the skin by the afternoon, and longest-lasting on wool.

About Saddle Room

Saddle Room, a soft leather eau de parfum of suede, hay and birch smoke, is the tack room on the evening before the meet: saddles on their racks, bridles hung to dry, and tack cleaned by lantern light. Hay, saddle soap and a thread of birch smoke, and the particular warmth of a room that smells of horses and good care.

It is a leather fragrance, but a leather without swagger. Leather in perfume can smell of a new handbag or a motorbike jacket; this one smells of care and use, of a saddle that has been oiled every week for twenty years. If you have looked for a perfume that smells like horses, this is how the House would put it: not the stable yard, but the tack room, where the leather is looked after.

Saffron and bitter orange open it with a golden, slightly bitter glow, like the light from a lantern hung on a nail, with a little clary sage. At the heart are hay absolute and supple suede, threaded with the faintest smoke of birch tar. The drydown is warm and close: tonka bean, creamy sandalwood and a leather accord.

The hay and the tonka belong together. Both carry the sweet, dry smell of a summer field put away for the winter, and here they soften the leather so that it reads as warm rather than dark. The birch smoke is only a thread: enough to remember the lantern, never enough to smell of a fire.

It is a gentle leather, made for those who turn up in all weathers and would rather not make a fuss about it.

How it wears

Saddle Room is a leather for October to March. One spray at the throat and one at the inside of the wrist; it sits close to the skin by the afternoon.

It is at home on tweed and suede, waxed cotton and a quilted jacket, a scarf that has been out in the rain. Wear it to the races in November, to a point-to-point, on a walk with the dogs on a cold Sunday and to the lunch that follows.

It is at its warmest on wool and in cold air. In high summer it can feel heavy; then the House would wear Henley, and bring Saddle Room back with the first frost.

Questions about Saddle Room

What does Saddle Room smell like?

Saffron and bitter orange at first, golden and a little bitter. Then hay, soft suede and a faint thread of birch smoke. Then tonka, sandalwood and a warm leather accord. A leather of care and use, never harsh.

Does Saddle Room smell like horses?

It smells of the tack room rather than the stable: oiled saddles, hay, suede and the smoke of a lantern. There is more about the room it came from in Notes from the Tack Room.

What fragrance family is Saddle Room?

Leather. In perfume, leather is an accord built from several materials rather than an extract of leather itself; there is more in our note on leather.

How is Saddle Room different from Racing Green?

Saddle Room is a leather fragrance from the start, softened with hay, suede and tonka. In Racing Green the leather comes last, beneath cut grass, vetiver and oakmoss, so it is greener, cooler and drier.

Can I try Saddle Room before choosing a bottle?

Yes. The Discovery Set holds all six of our eaux de parfum in 2 ml atomisers, so you can wear Saddle Room for a day beside the others. Its £38 is credited in full against your first bottle, or The Pair.

When can I order Saddle Room?

Not quite yet. Register free with the form above; it commits you to nothing. We make three fragrances first, in time for Christmas, guided by which ones people ask for, and the other three in the new year.
