The Composition

Racing Green opens with the sharp, bitter green of galbanum and freshly mown grass, brightened by Calabrian bergamot. It is the smell of the paddock on a cold morning, before anyone important has arrived.

As it settles, violet leaf and Haitian vetiver bring an earthy, almost metallic depth, and the base arrives slowly: supple saddle leather, oakmoss and dry cedar. Worn close to the skin, it lasts the day and asks for nothing.

Wearing it

Two sprays at the base of the throat. Best on cool mornings, on wool and waxed cotton. Lasts through a long day; softest by evening.

About Racing Green

Racing Green, a green chypre eau de parfum, is the house signature: the paddock at first light, before anyone important has arrived. Cut grass still wet with dew, an engine warming in the cold, and the leather of a steering wheel that has seen fifty summers. The name is the green that British cars once wore in international motor racing, and the fragrance keeps the same manner: deep, composed and in no hurry to be noticed.

A chypre is built on a contrast, bright citrus above and a dark, mossy base below, and a green chypre brings the leaves and stems of the garden to the front. Here the green comes first and the moss and leather take their time.

It opens with galbanum, a resin with the bitter green of a snapped stem, beside freshly mown grass and Calabrian bergamot. The heart is violet leaf, clary sage and Haitian vetiver: earthy, almost metallic, like cold air over a wet field. Then the base arrives slowly, supple saddle leather, oakmoss and dry cedarwood, and the morning becomes an afternoon in the car with the windows down.

Nothing in it is sweet, and nothing is loud. The grass and galbanum are sharp for a little while, as a cold morning is, and then the fragrance settles close to the skin, where the leather and moss are what the person beside you notices. It asks for nothing.

If you are choosing one HERITAGE fragrance to wear on most days of the year, this is the one the House would point to first: green enough for the morning, leathered enough for the evening, and quiet throughout.

How it wears

Racing Green belongs to the cooler half of the year: autumn mornings, a bright, dry day in winter, the first cold weeks of spring. It is at home on wool and waxed cotton, on a tweed jacket on the way to the country, and on a long day out of doors that ends by a fire.

Two sprays at the base of the throat is the House’s suggestion. On a cold morning it begins sharp and green; by the evening it has become leather and moss, which suits dinner as well as it suited the drive.

In high summer, reach for something lighter, such as Henley, and keep Racing Green for the evenings that turn cool.

Questions about Racing Green

What does Racing Green smell like?

Cut grass and the bitter green of galbanum at first, brightened by bergamot. Then violet leaf, clary sage and vetiver, earthy and cool. Then saddle leather, oakmoss and dry cedar. It starts green and finishes leathery and mossy, and it is never sweet.

What fragrance family is Racing Green?

A green chypre. A chypre sets bright citrus over a base of oakmoss; a green chypre puts green notes at the front, here galbanum, cut grass and violet leaf. There is more on the moss itself in our note on oakmoss.

How is Racing Green different from Saddle Room?

Both have leather in them. In Racing Green the leather is the base of a green fragrance, arriving after grass, vetiver and moss. Saddle Room is a leather fragrance from the start, softer and warmer, with hay, suede and tonka.

Can I try Racing Green before choosing a bottle?

Yes. The Discovery Set holds all six of our eaux de parfum in 2 ml atomisers, so you can wear Racing Green for a whole day beside the others. Its £38 is credited in full against your first bottle, or The Pair.

When can I order Racing Green?

Not quite yet. Register free with the form above; it commits you to nothing. We make three fragrances first, in time for Christmas, guided by which ones people ask for, and the other three in the new year. The first hundred to register become founding members, with 48 hours to pre-order before anyone else: £95 founding price, £110 after.
