The Composition

Henley is summer on the river, remembered precisely. Cool cucumber and garden mint meet the snap of bergamot at the opening, like the first sip of something poured over ice.

The heart is green fig leaf and a whisper of orange blossom, with a clean linen accord that smells of starched shirts drying in the sun. White cedar and ambrette seed keep the base light, while vetiver gives it just enough gravity to last until the evening.

Wearing it

Two sprays at the throat, and one over a linen collar if you like. At its best on warm days and out of doors. The brightness settles within the hour; fig leaf and vetiver carry it into the evening.

About Henley

Henley, a fresh aromatic eau de parfum of fig leaf and clean linen, is summer on the river, remembered precisely: the first week of July, mist lifting from the water before the first race, a skiff tied beneath the willows and a boater left on the seat. Fig leaves over the towpath, pressed linen, and something cold in a silver cup.

Aromatic fresh means herbs and green leaves over light woods, rather than flowers or resins. It is the House’s summer fragrance, and a summer fragrance that does not shout: cool where others are sweet, and green where others are loud.

Cool cucumber and garden mint meet the snap of bergamot at the opening, like the first sip of something poured over ice. The heart is green fig leaf and a whisper of orange blossom, with a clean linen accord that smells of starched shirts drying in the sun. White cedar and ambrette seed keep the base light, while vetiver gives it just enough gravity to see the afternoon out.

The linen is pressed linen, not washing powder. It is the smell of a clean shirt put on at the end of a hot day, slightly warm from the iron, and it sits under the fig leaf so that the whole thing reads as a garden by the water rather than a laundry.

The mint is garden mint, the kind that grows too well by the back door, not the mint of toothpaste; the cucumber is cut, cold, from the fridge. Like the river in July, it is bright at first and then easy. Worn close, it suits people who would rather be comfortable than remarked upon.

How it wears

Henley is for warm days and out of doors: a river, a garden, a cricket ground, a wedding in July, a long lunch that becomes an evening on the terrace.

Two sprays at the throat, and one over a linen collar if you like. It suits linen and cotton, a white shirt with the sleeves rolled, a blazer worn over not very much.

From May to September it is at home almost anywhere, including the office. In winter it can feel thin; then the House would reach for The Orangery, which keeps a little summer under glass.

Questions about Henley

What does Henley smell like?

Cucumber, garden mint and bergamot at first, cool and green. Then fig leaf, a little orange blossom and a clean, pressed linen accord. Then white cedar, ambrette and vetiver, light and dry.

What fragrance family is Henley?

Aromatic fresh: herbs and green leaves over light woods, rather than flowers or resins. There is more on its heart in our note on fig leaf.

Is Henley a summer fragrance?

Yes, above all. It was composed around the river in the first week of July, and it is happiest on warm days and out of doors. It is easy enough for the office in summer too.

How is Henley different from The Orangery?

Both are bright, and both have orange blossom. Henley is green and herbal, with fig leaf, mint and linen, and it belongs to summer. The Orangery is citrus and white flowers softened with orris, and it is kindest in winter.

Can I try Henley before choosing a bottle?

Yes. The Discovery Set holds all six of our eaux de parfum in 2 ml atomisers, so you can wear Henley for a day beside the others. Its £38 is credited in full against your first bottle, or The Pair.

When can I order Henley?

Not quite yet. Register free with the form above; it commits you to nothing. We make three fragrances first, in time for Christmas, guided by which ones people ask for, and the other three in the new year. The first hundred to register become founding members, with 48 hours to pre-order before anyone else: £95 founding price, £110 after.
